SOUTH LAWN AND FORECOURT
As you enter the gardens to the right is The South Lawn and nestling in the embrace of the house sits The Forecourt. When in 1936 the house was turned back to front by architects Wellesley and Wills, Geoffrey Jellicoe ‘pedestrianised’ The Forecourt and planted its massive yews, standing guard over the elegant statues. From the Sphinx steps look south east towards Brixworth church sitting on a ridge in the far distance. This view is uninterrupted and a ha-ha separates the garden from the parkland and the Mitchell Bridge, built in circa 1780.
