Reflecting Pool, Philosopher’s Garden
and The Secret Garden

As you make your way along The Terrace, you can head straight on to The Reflecting Pool with lovely Beech topiary, Anemone Leveillei, Dianthus Carthusianorum and some fabulous tree Peonies ‘renkaku’. Alternatively you can detour right handed under the Weeping Beech to The Secret Garden. Once a small knot of garden of Box and gravel, the box was killed by Box Blight. It has now been replanted with a beautiful mespilus germanica, and two acacia hispida either side of the door to the Secret Garden.

Through the door on your left is The Philosopher’s Garden, so called because the keystone above the door depicts “The Philosopher”. This area is dominated by two large Beech trees casting their shadow and restricting airflow. The bench provides a quiet space after the assault on your senses from the rest of the garden as you look back over The Reflecting Pool towards The Dog Walk and The Spinney Garden on the right.
