The Monkey Pool

The Monkey Pool, named after the monkey that sits astride the pond, is a difficult space to garden as it is tucked in on the northside of the house and overshadowed by a magnificent Cedar of Lebanon. The Cedar is thought to date from 1740 when George Wheeler was collecting plants in the Eastern Mediterranean. A pair of Cercidyphyllum Rotfuchs guard the steps as you descend to it and the whole is lit up by Hydrangea Mme Emile Mouillere planted in containers, Iris sibirica ‘White Swirl’, Dryopteris Wallichiana and later in the season Anemone White Swan with its delightful purple backs.
